TEATRO DEI LUOGHI – INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Cities are like people. They have a name and have qualities and values, have imperfections and defects. They have characteristics that give them a precise attitude.
Teatro dei Luoghi Festival Internazionale draws an imaginary map that connects the ancient center with the outskirts and with another city, almost disappeared, that gave rise to the current one. A natural setting, that ties and tells, that lets itself be lived and gives itself to the most curious visitor; that creates new paths and new possible roads of meaning. A Festival to discover other cultures, that observes and thinks, looking where others don’t look.
Theatre, dance and music mark a path that starts from the specificity of each chosen place to take on new meaning, renewing its anthropological, political and cultural function. A journey into the polis from myth to memory, from ritual to community, combining popular theater and research theater.
Among the folds of the streets there is always something that escapes a quick glance, so as to make them different and wonderful every time you look at them. Fragments of stone, an ancient convent, a garden on the edge paved with beauty are mysterious doors to look inside.
PLACES
Rectorate cloister
The Convent of S. Maria del Carmine (or of the Carmelites) is realized between the ‘500 and the ‘600 on plan of Padovano Bacchisi. An admirable series of columns surround the imposing cloister from which is visible the Dome with the white and green glazed ceramics and the bell tower of the adjacent church of the Carmine (1711-1717). Today the Convent houses the prestigious seat of the Rectorate of the University of Salento.
Cantieri Teatrali Koreja and Ortale
The first example of urban regeneration in the Borgo Pace district, the Cantieri Teatrali Koreja is a former brick factory redesigned for culture and entertainment. The Ortale is a green space inscribed in the area of Cantieri Teatrali Koreja; its garden offers scents of aromatic herbs, flowers, plants, lime and citrus.
Archaeological sites of Rudiae
Rudiae is one of the most important archaeological sites in Salento. It constitutes with other ancient settlements like the nearby Lupiae, today’s Lecce. At the centre of the settlement is preserved, almost in its entirety, the amphitheatre built during the reign of Trajan (98-117 a.d.)
